Bank of Tanzania is developing regulatory framework after lifting 2019 ban.
Currently, there is no comprehensive licensing framework for crypto businesses. The Bank of Tanzania has established a Fintech Regulatory Sandbox for testing innovative financial products, which may include crypto-related services, but this is not a general licensing regime. Outside the sandbox, crypto activities are strongly discouraged by the central bank.
The Finance Act, 2024 introduced a 3% withholding tax on payments made to the owner of a digital asset for the exchange or transfer of the asset. The tax treatment for capital gains on crypto is not explicitly defined outside of this withholding tax, but the asset class is recognized for tax purposes.
